FC Midtjylland has never been stronger on the pitch - and much of that strength stems from Anders Holch Povlsen’s takeover three seasons ago.
What actually happened?
On 15 August 2023 Anders Holch Povlsen bought 95.5% of FC Midtjylland’s shares via his company Heartland. That date marked a turning point, board chair Claus Steinlein told Bold.dk. Heartland, controlled by Povlsen, now owns FC Midtjylland through The Football Collective. The exact price was never disclosed, but rumours put the deal at around £40 million - roughly 350 million Danish kroner.
Why does the ownership matter so much?
Steinlein points to bigger muscle in the battle for top spots both domestically and across Europe. With 60 points from 32 games, FC Midtjylland sit second in the Superliga - just seven points behind leaders Aarhus. The side has scored 72 and conceded 36, a goal difference of +36.
The new ownership has also unlocked fresh synergies. Shared values between Heartland and FC Midtjylland have strengthened the club’s ability to attract top names and invest in the academy. According to Steinlein, that has been crucial in meeting sporting ambitions.
What’s next?
FC Midtjylland are set to keep chasing the title. They travel to SønderjyskE on 26 July 2026 - a side currently sixth in the table. With a recent run of LDDDW and a +36 goal difference, the team is in strong form to close the gap on Aarhus.
Steinlein stresses that Holch Povlsen’s commitment will remain central to the club’s growth. With 95.5% of the shares in hand, there’s no doubt who pulls the strings - and it’s already showing on the pitch.
